MURDER YOUR EMPLOYER: A McMaster’s Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes
You may get some strange looks from people around you if you are seen reading Rupert Holmes’ latest novel, Murder Your Employer: A McMaster’s Guide to Homicide. Not only is the title an eye catcher but inside it’s cover the reader will certainly find a healthy dose of interesting, yet frighteningly realistic tips of how to axe someone.
Holmes has taken an exciting approach in his writing of M.Y.E. It is a collection of journal entries and observations that are strung together to give us the complete story through the eyes of the wannabe killers and their professors who are in charge of educating their pupils.
As the reader approaches the half way point of the novel, it may dawn on them that it seems to be drawing to a close rather quickly. Take note, it isn’t.
The pacing of the first half bordered on a tad droll, simply because it seems like a rushed lesson plan that the author wanted to get through as quickly as possible so he could get to the meat of the story. While this may work for some readers, in the age of dark academia and an obsession with “world building”, this novel ditched that and focused primarily on the deletions (as they are referred to within the text). It really starts to pick up midway through the novel, where the reader is treated to the excitement that comes after the brief education at McMasters.
There is no doubt that Holmes has a series planned for the world of the deletists as made evident within the novel and the giant “1” on the front cover of the book.
Needless to say, it is an exciting world to explore and who doesn’t love a good old fashioned book about Murder(ing) Your Employer?
