ALIEN (1979)

Considered to be one of the greatest science fiction horror films of all time. Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien, changed the game when it came to creature films. He took (and continues to take) his audience to the farthest reaches of space while subjecting them to some of the greatest thrills and chills ever put on film.

When a space craft transporting important minerals back to Earth, the Nostromos, intercepts a call from near by in space. Mother, the onboard AI, directs them to land on a mysterious piece of space rock to investigate. As the investigation is underway, one of the crew members is suddenly attacked by creature. What follows is a series of horrifying events that culminates in one of the greatest showdowns of all time.

Ridley has always had a knack for casting and if any film proves this, it is Alien. Sigourney Weaver, Ian Holm, and William Hurt are only a few of the notable names attached and they are all iconic in their portrayals.

Even though the film was made in 1979 and the special effects may seem lackluster by today’s standards, the film holds up spectacularly. The fear that Scott created resonates just as well today. The only complaint is that younger audiences, myself included, never got to experience the majesty in the theater. Thankfully, Scott has not given up his craft and is still making installments within the series.

So if thrills and chills are what you are seeking, look no further than the classic space thriller, Alien. Remember, “In space, there is no one to hear you scream.”
