TREASURE PLANET (2002)

Throughout the decades, there have been many interpretations of Treasure Island, brought to the silver screen. Legends have embodied Long John Silver, Jim Hawkins and Billy Bones. So some people may have rolled their eyes when Walt Disney Animated Studios released Treasure Planet. Afterall, it is a retelling that no one asked for but they felt they had made something special by setting it in a futuristic space setting, complete with aliens and robots.

As time would tell us, they were 100% correct. What Disney has created is pure adrenaline fueled excitement. The action is thrilling, causing the audience to hold their breath until the final swing of the pirate’s sword. Not only is the action good but the new spin on the characters never feels forced. After viewing it, it seems completely believable that this story was always meant to be inhabited by cyborg aliens racing to find an entire planet made of gold, silver, and gems.

Speaking of gold, silver and gems, the vibrant color scheme and added CGI pyrotechnics are one of the many reasons to check out this film. It is truly beautiful how spectacular the visuals are. I will be the first to admit that I discovered this film much later in life, years and years after it’s release and I was dumbfounded that I had waited so long.

It would be fair to say that is one of Disney’s most underrated film and for good reason. The cast is stacked, the visuals rival many of Disney’s biggest hits, and it is just a heck of a lot of fun!

So if you find yourself looking for a fun animated adventure to indulge in, check out Treasure Planet. There is no doubt you will enjoy every moment and maybe you will even find yourself wanting to return sooner rather than later.
